Motel One Edinburgh- Royal has only been open for about 2 years now.
Although the Motel One chain is considered a budget-design chain, their accommodations are nothing short of splendid!
Motel One Edinburgh-Royal is located in the heart of the city, just a short walk from Waverly Station (which was very beneficial for us, seeing as we arrived to and departed from York via train). We originally had a rental car booked for our time in Edinburgh and ended up canceling the reservation after realizing how walkable the city is.
Scotch Whiskey Experience & Camera Obscura & World of Illusions were two attractions we visited during our time in Edinburgh and they were located just around the corner from Motel One.
Edinburgh Castle was less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel’s front door. Other nearby local attractions include: the National Gallery of Scotland, The Scottish Parliament, the National and Royal Museum of Scotland, and the Royal Mile, to name a few.
The outside of the building was preserved to maintain its historic charm, while the interior is decorated in modern Scottish fashion!
The hub of the hotel, the One Lounge, is a lobby, bar and cafeteria all rolled into one!
All rooms are pretty much set up in the same manner with a comfortable double bed, flat screen TV, air-conditioning and an en-suite bathroom.
We were in a “room with a view” and I have to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with “the view”.
Now, I know the hotel cannot help where a tree was planted and has since grown to cover up the Sir Walter Scott Monument located directly behind the tree (and pictured below), but it was still a little bit of a disappointing “view”, which is actually an extra cost when booking that particular type of room.
We could see Waverly Station, however, if we looked out and to the right.
Our room was also located right above a street and very close to the train tracks, however the windows were very well insulated, so with the windows closed, our room was rather peaceful!
Breakfast is served each morning in the One Lounge and is not included in the room rate, although it can be added for just 7,50 (British Pounds).
A variety of meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, breads and pastries are available.
All in all, we had a pleasant stay at Motel One Edinburgh- Royal. The location could not have been more perfect and we felt relaxed and well-rested as we explored the beautiful and historic city of Edinburgh.
