1 Day Along the Amalfi Coast

Naples was a port of call on our 12-day Mediterranean Cruise. We decided to get out of the city and take a drive down the Amalfi Coast.

The Amalfi Coast

We booked a private tour through Joe Banana Limo and Carlo was our driver. He was full of knowledge about the Amalfi Coast.

Mt Vesuvius

After leaving the ugly port of Naples, we passed Mount Vesuvius.

Sorrento The Amalfi Coast

It was pretty hazy in the morning and I was nervous it wouldn’t clear, but eventually it did. We stopped at a lookout and took pictures of the town of Sorrento.

Italian road

Like the Pacific Coast Highway along the coast of California, the road along the Amalfi Coast is windy and drops off to the ocean far below.

Positano Italy

Our first stop was in the town of Positano. It was absolutely beautiful.

Carlo dropped us off for about an hour. We walked by shops and down to the beach. We took some photos, then stopped at a café for beer, coffee and Fanta!

Amalfi Italy

After continuing further along the coast, we spent about an hour in the town of Amalfi.

Amafli Giant Lemon

We stocked up on limoncello (this region of Italy is known for their lemons!) and ate gelato.

Bell tower Italy

Next, Carlo drove us to a town just before Ravello for lunch.

Ravello Italy

We ate at Ristorante Pizzeria San Giovanni. It was scrumptious!

Wine glass Italian Vineyard

Our meal started with prosecco and a local white wine.

Italian Pizza

We ordered caprese as an appetizer and each had our own pizza. (Naples is the birthplace of pizza.) We all sampled each other’s and all were amazing!

Two couples eating lunch and drinking wine

The meal ended with a chilled shot of limoncello. Mmm mmm! Refreshing! (Which was nice, because it was HOT!) The limoncello was a little stronger than we were expecting (30% alcohol), but still very good!

Ravello Italy

After lunch we went to our final stop – the less crowded town of Ravello.

Ravello Italy Souvenirs

We simply wandered the streets looking at ceramics (we bought a beautifully painted ceramic tile for our kitchen).

Ravello Italy

We ended our day with the drive back to the Naples port through the mountains. We had to stop in the middle of the road for goats to pass by.

The Amalfi Coast

We didn’t talk much on the way back, as we were all tired from a long day and the heat (it takes a lot out of you)! We just enjoyed the relaxing windy drive back to port. We were dropped off back at our ship, laid out, ate dinner and went to bed to rest up for our next adventure – Rome!

  1. Did you organize a tour with the ship, grab a cab or prearranged your own tour guide. We are first time cruisers and afraid of making mistakes.

    • We arranged a private driver through Joe Banana Limos. We shared the expense with another couple on our cruise and had the most incredible day! It wasn’t much more expensive than we would’ve paid for an (large group) excursion with the cruise ship. It was just the 4 of us and our driver and we could stop and go as we please. Totally worth every penny!

  2. Hi, this sounds like a wonderful experience. Can you send me his contact information? Thank you!
