Where to Look for Cheap Flights
When planning a trip, airfare is typically the first aspect of travel booked! You want to make sure you can get to your destination without breaking the bank before committing to the other aspects of travel, such as accommodations, rental car, bus, and/or train travel, and activities, for example. We've compiled a variety of methods we use for finding the best deals on airfare. As far as when to book, we've read so many differing opinions over the years, that we have no steadfast advice on how far out to book flights or what day of the week is best to shop for airfare. We have, however, found that flying midweek (Tuesday and Wednesday) typically yields the most affordable options. The key to finding cheap airfare is flexibility, and sometimes creativity. Fortunately, there are countless search engine and travel companies out there working hard to find you the absolute best deals, and while it may still take a little work on your end, your diligence in shopping around will definitely pay off in the end!

Search Engines are a great way to find the best deal on airfare by searching multiple airlines at once! Often we'll use the search engine to narrow down possibilities and then go directly to the airline's site to complete the sale. With sites like Skyscanner and Kayak, you can leave the final destination open to see where you can fly for how much. With flexible dates you'll be able to find scope out the best deal! With many search engines, there is the option set up price alerts to be notified if the flight you're considering drops in price.

Budget Airlines - United States
Budget airlines are often no-frills providers where almost everything requires an additional fee, i.e. luggage, seat assignment, meal, etc. And to get the absolute best deal, you'll need to book during one of their sales. If you live in the US, find out which of these airlines fly out of your home airport and then subscribe to their e-mail listserv or follow them on social media to get alerts about upcoming sales. With one of the carriers below (Frontier), we once booked a non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Orlando and back for $29 each way!
Budget Airlines - Europe
Just with the US Budget Airlines, European Budget Airlines are no-frills and often come with much higher add-on prices and luggage restrictions. If you book during one of their insane sales, you simply won't believe the prices (US to Europe for <$200 with Norwegian Air | RyanAir flights within Europe for <$10). So if you can pack light, bring your own food aboard, and not worry about where you sit on the plane, you could get away for ridiculously cheap!
E-mail Alerts / Facebook Pages
Signing up for a company's mailing list or subscribing to their social media channels is a great way to stay in-the-know about upcoming sales and special offers. The following sites scour the web to find the absolute best travel deals and then share out via e-mail and social media. Often the deals they find are for specific destinations and are sometimes fairly last minute, so if your dates are flexible or you're simply looking for future travel inspiration, subscribe to these sites!
Free Stop-Overs / Long Layovers
Several airlines are starting to get on-board with helping you make the most out of your vacation by including the option for a multi-day stay over a particular city for no additional airlines cost. Of course, you'll be responsible for lodging, transportation, meals, and other expenses while in the city, but it's the airline's way of encouraging you to explore their home country (i.e. - Icelandair -> Iceland | TAP Portugal -> Portugal), while taking advantage of their airlines services to your final destination.
The more you book (with a particular company), the more you save! Consider booking your airfare and lodging, and even rental car, through the same company for deep discounts. Often times, vacations with these particular companies are sold as a complete package deal. All you have to do is put in your dates, your destination, a few additional preferences, and BAM your vacation is planned for you! It keeps your itinerary details all in once place and put someone else (mostly) in charge of all of the details!
